Community Engagement and Impact

At Tillicoultry Quarries (TQ), community engagement isn’t just a strategy—it’s a core value that shapes our identity and operations. We believe in the power of community and the positive impact we can make together. Our initiatives are designed to build strong relationships, support local talent, and contribute meaningfully to the communities we serve.

Introducing Meg Bannerman, HR Assistant

Meg: “At TQ, my role involves two key areas: recruitment and awareness. We attend events to connect with job seekers and educate young people about career progression opportunities within the company. We also emphasise the importance of health and safety in quarrying.”

Importance of Community Engagement

Meg: “Being family-run, TQ has deep community roots. Many people know the family or someone who works with us, creating a strong bond. Our business thrives on community support and engagement.”

Recent Initiatives

Meg: “We recently attended the Alloa Careers Fair, engaging with both job-seeking adults and high school students, which led to hiring a young man from the community. We also participated in the Midlothian Mining Museum event, working with children on STEM learning to help them understand TQ’s work.”

Participation in Careers Events

Meg: “We participate in recruitment events hosted by Job Centre Plus and the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), who frequently invite us.”

Partnerships with Educational Institutions

Meg: “We have ongoing partnerships with local schools, colleges, and universities to ensure a steady flow of skilled talent into the industry. We actively advertise apprenticeships to attract skilled individuals.”

Ensuring Diversity and Inclusion

Meg: “We work with a diverse range of schools  offering pupils and insight into our industry  to inspire and engage them in the work we do. By providing these students with a firsthand look at our operations, we aim to spark their interest in the industry and demonstrate the various career paths available to them. This has also helped to build  confidence and show them that there are supportive and inclusive workplaces where they can thrive. It’s about giving every student, regardless of their background or challenges, the opportunity to see their potential and explore new possibilities.”

Future Community Engagement and Talent Acquisition Plans

Meg: “We aim to participate in at least one careers event at each of our sites across the country to attract the best candidates.”

Rewards of the Role

Meg: “Interacting with people and giving back to the community is incredibly rewarding. Growing up here, I love helping children unsure about their future by showing them the possibilities within TQ.”

Conclusion

At Tillicoultry Quarries, community engagement is integral to our operations. Through dedicated team members like Meg Bannerman, we build strong connections, support local talent, and contribute to our community’s well-being.
