On the Road with Steven: A Day in the Life of a Tillicoultry Quarries HGV Driver

At Tillicoultry Quarries, our HGV drivers are the backbone of the business to get materials where they need to be, safely and on time. We caught up with our dedicated driver Steven, to chat about what his typical day looks like, why vehicle safety is always top priority, and the value in team support.

Describe a typical day at TQ.

Steven:

I start early, and it rarely changes which is good for getting into a routine. First thing is to conduct my vehicle checks, once complete and satisfactory I head off to one of our local quarries to collect my load and find out what I’m doing for the day. Most of my routes are fairly local and I am always home at the end of the day.

No two days are the same. One day I might be delivering to a big construction site, the next I’m heading to a smaller job. You’ve always got to be switched on, but that’s part of what keeps it interesting.

What part does safety play in your role?

A big part. It’s not just about ticking boxes, safety comes first always. The fleet is always looked after properly, we’ve got solid maintenance routines, and everyone is responsible to speak up if something’s not right.

For me, knowing the vehicle is in top shape means I can do my job with confidence and gives me peace of mind.

What’s it like being part of the Tillicoultry Quarries team?

It’s a real team. Whether it’s the team at the quarry, the office, or other drivers, everyone’s approachable and willing to help out. If there’s an issue on the road or with a delivery, you’re never left to deal with it on your own. You’ve always got backup to rely on.

What makes being a driver at TQ different?

You’re looked after, there’s always someone on hand to contact or speak to if you need it. They provide training and qualifications so I feel invested in and I know I’m being listened to when I speak up or have an idea. Success is a team effort no matter what role you play.

What is your favourite part of the job?

Being on the road, seeing the countryside and having the variety in the workload is what keeps it interesting for me. Getting to know the customers and engaging with new and different people is always a pleasure.
