Scottish Apprenticeship Week: Building careers that last at TQ

Scottish Apprenticeship Week shines a light on the value apprenticeships bring to individuals, employers and communities across the country. This year’s theme, Working for Scotland, reflects the role apprentices play in building skills, strengthening businesses and supporting long-term economic growth.

At Tillicoultry Quarries, apprenticeships are part of who we are. As a family business with deep roots across Scotland, we see apprentices not simply as trainees, but as future leaders, supervisors, plant operators, fitters and technical specialists who will carry our standards forward.

A real start to a real career

An apprenticeship at TQ is grounded in practical experience from day one. Apprentices are immersed in live environments across our quarries, concrete plants, asphalt sites and support functions, learning alongside experienced colleagues who understand the importance of doing the job properly.

There is structure, support and patience in equal measure. College learning sits alongside hands-on experience, giving apprentices the technical understanding and the confidence to apply it safely and effectively on site.

Confidence built year by year

We believe progression should feel earned. Early years focus on core skills, safety, and understanding how each site operates; later years bring increased responsibility, ownership of tasks and the opportunity to mentor others coming through behind them.

Our final-year apprentices consistently talk about how that steady progression prepares them for the next stage of their career. They leave their apprenticeship not only qualified, but confident and ready to contribute as full members of the team.

Support that makes the difference

Behind every successful apprentice is a strong support network. At TQ, experienced team members take pride in passing on knowledge, setting high standards and helping apprentices develop good habits from the outset.

Support shows up in everyday moments; taking time to explain a process, encouraging questions, reinforcing safe behaviours and recognising improvement. That culture of guidance and accountability is central to our approach.

Living our values from the start

An apprenticeship at TQ is about more than technical capability. It is about understanding what we stand for; teamwork, service excellence, integrity and commitment to doing things the right way.

Apprentices quickly see how their role fits into the bigger picture. Whether working in operations, maintenance, logistics or technical services, they contribute to a wider team effort that keeps projects moving and customers supported.

Working for Scotland, building for the future

Scottish Apprenticeship Week highlights how apprenticeships work for Scotland. At TQ, they also work for our communities, our customers and our people.

By investing in apprentices, we are investing in the long-term strength of our business and the industry we are proud to be part of. We are developing skilled professionals who understand our standards, share our values and are ready to build their future with us.

We are proud of every apprentice who chooses this path, and of the colleagues who guide them along the way.
